ELECTION 2011: WHERE DO THE PARTIES STAND ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES?

Environmental Defence, the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Equiterre and the Pembina Institute asked the five main political parties to respond to 10 questions on key environmental issues. The verbatim responses from the four parties that responded – Bloc Quebecois, Green Party, Liberal Party and NDP – are below.

In my opinion the Conservatives have been highly irresponsible concerning environmental issues and their lack of response to these questions reinforces that opinion.

Very helpful summary, Alan, thanks. I’m printing it off to have at our booth at the local Earth Festival next weekend – saves me research time!

  3. David Wilson says:

who can you trust? the Green Party? which is sinking in the polls and which may (pardon the pun) still elect no one, says 30% by 2020, but according to the science I understand we need 80% by 2020 (!)

in my riding the Green Party has put forward a real-estate banker (as near as I can figgure out what he does for a living)

I cruised the next-door riding last week too, Danforth, Jack Layton’s riding, and did not see a single Green Party lawn sign, grant you I did not go past the candidate’s own house, it not being on a bus or streetcar route y’unnerstan’ …

I trust Lester Brown, who has the only plan I have seen making sense, see here for emission targets (among other things) http://www.earth-policy.org/data_highlights/2011/highlights12/?

but it’s not supposed to be about rules-of-thumb and trust I guess eh?

there are two events planned here in Toronto, a nuclear rally at noon on Good Friday at Queen’s Park, and People’s Assembly III on Silent Saturday … who knows?

Why has the environment completely fallen out of the minds of Canadians? Don’t tell me the recession explanation. No, Saskatchewan has no recession and the Ministry of the Environment rubber stamps all the requests for oil wells, mines and general effluent dischange. We’re soaking up the cash, getting while the gettings good and selling our selves down the river. Ground water? Heck, we will be able to manufacture it once all our supplies are polluted by fraking and industry. Come on. No vote will change this.
